Smart meter provider Itron and networking communications giant Cisco are joining forces to develop a more secure and reliable smart grid platform.
The two companies plan to develop a standards-based, highly secure technology based on the latest version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6, which integrates network security into the platform and simplifies data processing.
The “definitive” smart grid platform will offer more consistent and reliable delivery of energy across the electric distribution system and into homes and businesses, claim Itron and Cisco.
The approach will also ensure interoperable wired and wireless communications between difference parts of the smart grid to help utilities better manage customer demand across their networks.
“The alliance between Cisco and Itron represents a major step forward in the realization of a modern, more intelligent energy infrastructure,” says Laura Ipsen, Cisco senior vice president and general manager for the Smart Grid business unit.
“Utilities will benefit from an energy grid that is more secure, scalable and reliable, as well as solutions that are easier to maintain and able to support future needs,” she adds.
Itron will also license and embed Cisco IP technology within its OpenWay® meters and distribute Cisco networking equipment and software with its smart meters.
