Record numbers install solar panels

Record numbers of Brits installed solar panels on their properties in August, new figures show.
According to statistics from energy regulator Ofgem, 2,257 homes were fitted with solar panels last month. This is in comparison to 1,700 properties in July and 1,400 homes in June.
Since the feed-in tariff scheme was launched in April of this year, 6,688 homeowners have installed solar panels.
The initiative means that people earn money for the green electricity they generate, even if it is not sold back to the grid. Payments through the feed-in tariff are made for 25 years and will rise in line with inflation.
Prince Charles was recently granted permission to install solar panels on the roof of his official residence, Clarence House in London.
Some 32 photovoltaic panels will be fitted on the 170-year-old building that will be capable of generating 4,000 kilowatt hours of power a year, which is the amount of energy used each year by the average household in London.
