US reaches milestone of 200,000 ‘weatherized’ homes
US Vice President Joe Biden announced last week that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has reached the milestone of ‘weatherizing’ 200,000 low-incomes homes.
The Department of Energy (DOE)’s Weatherization Assistance Program is now improving the energy efficiency of around 25,000 homes per month and is making progress towards the Administration’s target of 600,000 homes.
The programme supports the replacement of old inefficient windows and doors, as well as installing insulation, typically saving families around $400-600 a year on energy bills.
Earlier in the month, the DOE announced $120 million in support for 119 organisations to try out new ways of financing the weatherization of homes.
Meanwhile, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded over $100 million for 100 affordable housing developments in 31 states totalling over 8000 residences.
