BloombergCompanies will spend 500 million reais ($242 million) on 35 energy-efficiency projects in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro through 2015, Julio Bueno, Rio de Janeiro’s secretary of economic development, said.
Light SA (LIGT3), a power utility based in Rio de Janeiro city, and Ampla Energia e Servicos SA, a Niteroi, Brazil-based utility controlled by Madrid-based Endesa SA (ELE), are two of the companies investing, Bueno said today in a phone interview.
Light will install solar panels on the Maracana stadium, site of some of the games of the 2014 World Cup, with consulting company EDF Consultoria, the state government said today in an e-mailed statement. Ampla will create more-efficient air conditioning and lighting in public buildings.
The state, which may implement the nation’s first market for carbon credits next year, is seeking to boost its green credentials ahead of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development June 20-22, Bueno said.
“We want to show the rest of Brazil that we’re not just a leader in production, but a leader in ideas and green innovations,” Bueno said.
The state government will furnish funds for the projects, and companies will provide most of the investment, he said.
